Personal Horse Owners Liability

Horse Owners are faced with unique liability exposures that may not be adequately covered under normal personal liability policies such as a homeowner policy. The Equestrian Group has specifically designed an insurance policy to cover the horse owner’s legal liability for both bodily injury and property damage to others resulting from horse ownership. If you own horses, and do not operate a commercial horse business, our Private Horse Owner liability policy protects you against claims that were brought on by your horse. This includes bodily injury or property damage to a third party on or off your premises — even if your horse is kept at an independently owned stable. If your horse comes into contact with people, you need this type of coverage!  Many homeowners’ policies limit this coverage or exclude it altogether. Liability coverage, including defense costs, is available with limits up to $1 million. Prices are very competitive, beginning at only $25 per horse, subject to minimum premiums. Our standard program does not provide coverage for incidents while the horse is being used or prepared for use in conjunction with a carriage, buggy or similar vehicle. A coverage extension for non-commercial pleasure or competition driving is available by endorsement.

Care Custody & Control – Equine Bailee Coverage

This insurance is essential for equestrian business who board or train horses or who are responsible for other people’s horses while showing or racing them. The policy pays all sums you are legally obligated to pay others for damage to horses in your care, custody or control.

This coverage does not apply to horses you own or lease, which typically are covered by a mortality policy.  Almost all general liability policies exclude coverage for injury or death to any animal in your care, custody or control.

Our CC&C policy will defend and protect you against claims for negligent loss. If you are a trainer, breeder or stable owner you cannot afford to be without this additional protection.

Your policy will cover the injury, theft or death of the horses in your care.  Policy limits are available from $1,000 to $500,000 per animal and from $25,000 to $1,000,000 maximum loss per policy year. In addition to paying for damages to horses, we will defend any suit against you.  We will provide funds for you to purchase bail bonds, we will pay interest on judgments and all costs taxed against you in the suit.  We will also pay expenses you incur at our request to assist us in your defense, including loss of earnings, up to $100 a day. Premiums are based upon the average number of horses in your care or the total number of horses in any one barn, whichever is greater.  The basic policy includes incidental transit of horses which is generally defined as 6 trips of 150 miles or less.  The 150 mile radius restriction can be eliminated for an additional premium.
